The Wynn Las Vegas on Friday evening opened its 2019 Kentucky Derby wagering with two interests: Roadster (25-1) and Instagrand (30-1). Both colts are debut winners on the West Coast trained by Hall of Famers.
Roadster, from the Bob Baffert barn, received quite a schooling last Sunday in his first start. After reluctant to enter the gate under jockey Mike Smith, he was positioned behind horses and made a powerful move through the turn. The son of Quality won by 4 1/4 lengths in a final time of 1:11.07 for six furlongs.
Next for Roadster is the Sept. 3 Del Mar Futurity, a Grade 1, $300,000 race at seven furlongs.
Instagrand, trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, put forth an inspiring debut of his own on June 29 at Los Alamitos, romping by 10 lengths after dueling early. He is now working regularly. The $1.2 million purchase is campaigned by OXO Equine, whose Instilled Regard ran fourth in the 2018 Kentucky Derby.
Instagrand is pointing to Del Mar’s Aug. 11 Best Pal Stakes, a Grade 2, $200,000 race at six furlongs.
