Vermont will begin issuing free $30 shop-local gift cards on a first-come, first-serve basis to residents next week — to help businesses impacted by COVID-19.

Residents may register for the cards beginning at 11 a.m. on Sept. 8 through the state's #BuyLocalVermont website, administered by the Vermont Department of Economic Development.
The cards can count toward spending at Vermont-owned restaurants, retail stores, entertainment and performing arts venues, lodging and other tourism-related businesses, the department says.

Prohibited from the shopping list: Firearms, weapons, alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, lottery tickets and fireworks, according to guidelines. But CBD and hemp are allowable purchases.
The program 'puts real money in the hands of residents and jumpstarts sales for the small businesses powering our communities,' the department website states.
When signing up for a card, residents state their preference for the type of business they wish to patronize — and they are matched up with merchants who have previously signed up.
Funding for the gift cards is through the federal CARES Act, disbursed through states.
